I painted this while living in New York City for graduate school, a season when I often felt far from the comforts of home in a fast-paced, sometimes harsh environment. The rain, fog, towering buildings, and glowing tree at the center brought together two worlds for me: the New York I was learning to navigate and the tree of life I knew from scripture. The figures move in different directions; some descending underground, some distracted, some searching—while a mother and child turn toward the tree and its fruit. The city became a place where I had to learn to look for evidence of God's love in an unexpected place. I found it.
