Thank you for taking the time to visit and learn more about me and my work! I'd love to share my artistic journey with you and why I have chosen to create art as a profession.
I have been blessed with incredible opportunities to study under exceptional artists; both in universities, art schools, and in rich artistic communities. I have studied art at BYU-Idaho and Provo, Utah Valley University, Beaux-Arts Academy, Accademia Vivarium Novum in Rome and earned an MFA at New York Academy of Art. Through studying from world-class artists coupled with my own artistic endeavors and adventures I have not only found information and skills, but my mind and heart have been expanded as has my confidence to choose art creation as my full-time career.
Being an artist is such a meaningful, unique profession because it enables me to explore and share what really matters to me; my faith, my love of children and nature, and important ideas about life experiences. Painting is how I reflect, listen, and respond to the world around me. It is my deep privilege to share with you what is personal and close to my heart.
My creative process begins when a feeling or idea I have been carrying collides with an image that best expresses it. It can be something I see in the world or that I generate in my mind. I will go through a process of creating sketches, finding visual imagery to photograph, making clay maquettes, or designing with my own imagination. I then explore different color and value schemes, and then after preparing my linen or panel, begin creating the painting.
I begin with loose, large, thin brushwork and increase the paint thinkness, work edges and describe form, and continue to refine the piece as the process continues. Usually there comes a painful period of struggling with unexpected problems using patience, critical thinking, and gaining inspiration from artworks of the past as changes are being made. And then finally, after persisting and solving the problems, there is the joy of finishing a piece to my satisfaction and finding its home!
I seek for reverence and honesty, allowing the work to unfold with sincerity and care. I believe art has the power to invite stillness and open a space for reflection, inviting us to slow down, pause, reflect, and find something of our own story in each piece.
My hope is that my work will offer more than something beautiful to look at, that it can become a quiet companion, a source of comfort and reminder of what matters most. I hope that as you see the world briefly through my eyes you will feel uplifted, loved, and encouraged!
Many thanks!
