But from whom does this Exaggerated weaponry protect you? How many enemies I've removed from you Who feared it not at all. On the contrary, from summer into autumn, You wound the care That is bestowed on you. Contre Qui — "against whom" — takes its title from Rilke, who wrote of roses closing inward. This triptych of rose studies is about decay and natural stages of life, held with tenderness rather than resisted: the way beauty doesn't end when a flower begins to fade, but simply changes form.
