This nativity is intentionally rough and half-obscured. In the foreground: a howling wolf, a pile of sticks with a rat and a snake, a horse with its back turned — signs of a world not paying attention and of its irreverence. The sacred event itself is only glimpsed through an opening beyond the mess. I painted this during a season when I was in a harsh, dismissive environment myself and wanted to acknowledge that while still pointing to the reality of the Divine, which sometimes can only be seen in a glimpse or through a crack rather than fully in all its glory. Seeing it requires that we look.
