I copied this piece by Jacques-Louis David while studying at the New York Academy of Art, painting in front of the original at the Met. I was drawn to the story more than the technique — Socrates, moments before his death, choosing to drink poison rather than go against what he knew to be right. He believed the integrity of the soul mattered more than preserving his own life, and that conviction went on to shape his followers and, eventually, the course of Western thought.
