This came from a moment I witnessed in New York City: a mother carrying her young child toward an elevator at the end of a long day, in a stark, fluorescent-lit hallway. What struck me was the contrast — such warmth and trust inside such a sterile, impersonal space. It brought back my own memories of hauling children through public places as a young mother, how heavy that felt and how meaningful it was at the same time. As I worked on it, the elevator started to feel symbolic of parenting itself — the quiet, often unseen labor of lifting a child, carrying them, helping them rise toward who they're meant to become.
