I'd just moved to New York City, far from my children, home, and being close to nature, and was feeling disoriented seeing my faith and my goals in the context of this new setting. One day I was told to bring an object to class for a still life, so I gathered a bundle of wildflowers, branches, and seeds from a nearby park and carried them in on the train. We were only allowed to use one color, terre verte, and I inserted the feeling of being pulled out by the roots and transplanted somewhere unfamiliar into the painting. The dragonfly is a reminder that transformation can happen even — maybe especially — in difficult, uncomfortable situations.
